I am like a pelican in the desert
Sometimes we just feel wrong, and can't put our finger on why. |
I love poetry. And I love prose. There is something about the stark beauty of it. The way it seems to reach down deep within a person, because that is where it is coming from. Listen to these words. For my days have been consumed as smoke, And my bones have been scorched like a hearth, My heart has been smitten like grass and has withered away, Indeed, I forget to eat my bread. Because of the loudness of my groaning my bones cling to my flesh. I am like a pelican of the desert; I have become like a lonely bird on a housetop. My enemies have repoached me all day long; Those who deride me have used my name as a curse. My days are like a lengthened shadow, and I wither away like the grass.
You know, everyone gets in the pits once in a while. Its normal. It is a part of our human nature. The body grows strong, and gets weak. The mind is the same way. Its not a happy place to be. But we know soon there will be sunlight in the window again. For some people there is little reprieve from the gloom. Why? Everyone seems to have an opinion, but no answer. I'll tell you what I believe. I believe some people are special. The word chosen fits very nicely. Many people can go through life, see a great injustice and go on. They say, or seem to, "that's life, that's how it goes". But there are special people who are born sensitive. They are more sensitive to injustice. They are more sentitive to the harsh way people have come to treat other people. People have feelings. People are far more fragile emotionally than they would have us believe. Some get hardened, are find a while to deflect the ache of seeing injustice. I believe these sensitive persons are placed in society to be our collective conscience. Everyone knows what it is like when your conscience is smarting! Some of us hurt for the wrong doings of others. Some ache for the wrongdoing they see in the whole of society, or in the world. Think about some of the most wonderful men and women in recent history that suffered from depression. Martin Luther King Jr. suffered greatly from depression. It is easy to see why when you recognize his vision for his people and the society they had to live in. Abraham Lincoln sufferd from the worst depression. He once said that he sometimes thought all the man who ever lived must not have felt the sorrow he felt. There was a reason for it. He was forced to send neighbor to war against neighbor. Even as right as it was, it was a gruesome task. When you feel the pangs of depression, try to discover what areas in life bring to the surface. If you learn to recognize the onset of the feelings of depression, then you can better discover what brings these feelings on you. And that is what they are, feelings. Feelings are like stain glass windows. Whatever light there is in the thoughts, they amplify, add color and animate them. That is what they do wonderfully. They is what they do best. And that is all they do. | How do I ascend from this pit?
Great men and women fought depression, despair, and such feelings. |
If you would think back on the last time you began to be depressed. Recall what kind of thoughts you were thinking. Nice thoughts? Pleasant thoughts? Thoughts of peace and rest? NO! You were thinking depressing thoughts. And your feelings just added life and color, animated, your depressing thoughts. Your feelings do not think. They just animate your thoughts. Feelings do not know if the thouhgts you are having are in the past, in the present or in the future. Let's use an example of fear. If you are thinking scary thoughts, what are you going to feel like? If you remember a time you were scared out of your wits, as you thing about it you will become afraid again. Likewise, if you think of something very scary in the future, then you will feel afraid right now. That is because your feelings don't know about any time frame. They are just doing what they are made to do, i.e., animate your thoughtlife. Now, lets look at anger. Anger is a secondary repsonse to fear. If someone or something scares you, well first you get fearful. Immediately when you recognize the source of your fear, you get mad at them. When you were growing up and some family member purposely scared you then you jump in fear. Then when you recognize them, you get mad at them. Anger is just a response to fear. Someone who is angry all the time is fearful of something they feel they can not control. So they get angry, throw tantrums like a baby, and try to get their way. Well, maybe not like a baby, more like a grown man acting like a baby. We all do this sort of thing. A problem arises when someone does it too much, are all the time. You see, fear, anger, even depression, are good things. They clue us in that something is wrong. They are intended to save our lives. They are meant to enhance our well-being. When they hang around a long time, well, it indicates something is wrong. And that person needs find what is going on that affects them that way. Below are some of my favorite links.
